Sebaceous hyperplasia is a common, benign skin condition caused by enlarged sebaceous (oil) glands. It appears as small, soft, yellow, white or flesh-coloured bumps, often with a characteristic central indentation (umbilication). These lesions are painless, non-contagious and usually develop gradually over time.
Sebaceous hyperplasia most commonly affects adults and is frequently found on areas of the face where oil glands are most abundant, including the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. While the condition is completely harmless and does not become skin cancer, it can sometimes resemble other skin lesions, such as basal cell carcinoma, making professional assessment important.
Many people choose to have sebaceous hyperplasia removed for cosmetic reasons, particularly when multiple lesions are present or they become more noticeable with age.
Sebaceous hyperplasia develops when the sebaceous (oil) glands become enlarged. Although the exact cause is not always known, several factors are thought to contribute to its development, including:
Sebaceous hyperplasia is not contagious, is not caused by poor hygiene and cannot be passed from one person to another
There is no guaranteed way to prevent sebaceous hyperplasia, as ageing and genetics play a significant role. However, maintaining healthy skin may help reduce your risk of developing new lesions.
