Understanding the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale: Why It Matters Before Laser and IPL Treatments
Whether you're considering laser hair removal, CO₂ laser resurfacing, IPL skin rejuvenation, pigmentation treatment or plasma skin tightening, one of the first things your practitioner should assess is your Fitzpatrick Skin Type.
At Body Perfection Clinic, understanding your skin type is an essential part of providing safe and effective treatment. It helps us choose the most appropriate technology and treatment settings while reducing the risk of unwanted side effects.
What Is the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale?
The Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale is an internationally recognised system used to classify skin according to how it responds to ultraviolet (UV) light. It was developed by Harvard dermatologist Dr Thomas B. Fitzpatrick and remains one of the most widely used skin assessment tools in aesthetic medicine.
The scale categorises skin into six types, ranging from very fair skin that burns easily to deeply pigmented skin that rarely burns.
The Six Fitzpatrick Skin Types
Type I
- Very fair skin.
- Often has red or blonde hair.
- Always burns in the sun.
- Rarely or never tans.
Type II
- Fair skin.
- Usually burns easily.
- May develop a light tan after repeated sun exposure.
Type III
- Light to medium skin tone.
- Sometimes burns.
- Gradually develops an even tan.
Type IV
- Olive or light brown skin.
- Rarely burns.
- Tans easily.
Type V
- Brown skin.
- Very rarely burns.
- Naturally darker pigmentation.
Type VI
- Deeply pigmented skin.
- Almost never burns.
- Highly pigmented naturally.

Why Does Skin Type Matter?
Many laser and light-based treatments work by targeting colour within the skin, such as pigment in hair follicles, unwanted pigmentation or visible blood vessels.
Because melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour) also absorbs laser energy, your skin type influences how safely and effectively a treatment can be performed.
Assessing your Fitzpatrick Skin Type allows your practitioner to choose appropriate treatment settings that maximise results while minimising the risk of complications.
As a General Guide
As a general guide, many laser and IPL treatments achieve the best results in patients with Fitzpatrick Skin Types I–IV, where there is often greater contrast between the treatment target and the surrounding skin.
For patients with Fitzpatrick Skin Types V and VI, additional care is required. Some laser and IPL systems may have greater difficulty distinguishing between the treatment target and the skin's natural melanin. This can increase the risk of side effects such as burns, blistering or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin). In some cases, existing pigmentation concerns may also become more noticeable following treatment.
As a result, some laser or IPL treatments may not be suitable for darker skin tones, and your practitioner may recommend an alternative treatment or a different type of laser that is better suited to your skin.
It is important to remember that this is a general guide. Suitability depends on your individual skin type, the condition being treated and the technology being used. This is why a professional consultation is essential before undergoing any laser or light-based treatment.
Are All Laser Treatments Suitable for Every Skin Type?
Not necessarily.
Different laser and energy-based devices work in different ways, and not every treatment is appropriate for every skin type. Some technologies have been specifically developed to safely treat darker skin tones, while others are better suited to lighter skin.
For this reason, suitability is always assessed on an individual basis rather than by skin type alone.
Why Is a Consultation So Important?
Before recommending any laser, IPL or plasma treatment, your practitioner will carry out a detailed consultation to assess your suitability.
During your consultation we will:
- Assess your Fitzpatrick Skin Type.
- Review your medical history and current medications.
- Discuss your treatment goals.
- Examine the treatment area.
- Explain the benefits and potential risks.
- Recommend the most suitable treatment for your skin type.
Where required, a patch test will also be carried out before treatment to assess how your skin responds.
Can My Skin Type Change?
Your natural Fitzpatrick Skin Type does not change, but your skin condition can.
Recent sun exposure, fake tan, certain medications and some medical conditions can affect whether treatment is safe at the time of your appointment.
This is why we ask about recent holidays, sunbed use and tanning products during your consultation.
What If I'm Not Suitable for Laser Treatment?
Your safety is always our priority.
If we don't believe a particular treatment is suitable for your skin type or skin condition, we will explain why and discuss alternative treatment options that may provide safer and more effective results.
At Body Perfection Clinic, we will only recommend treatments that we believe are appropriate for you.
